I think the secret for me to be successful in my career is most importantly to treat others with kindness and respect. Personal interaction is important to my clients and I try to deal directly with them, rather than turn them over to an assistant. The other is to know your value and appreciate whatever unique talents you bring to the table. There is only one you and it’s easy to second guess yourself, but I think being as authentic as you can is what people want in the long run.

Remember when your mother used to tell you you were special? She was right! Be open to inspiration and sage advice, absolutely, but staying true to who you really are, trusting your own taste and instincts and believing in yourself is the only way to make a unique contribution. If you falter or start to lose your plot, take some time out to read a great book. Reading recharges my creative batteries like nothing else. Ultimately, you’ll forge your own path. It might take many curves and detours, mine certainly has, but no one promised it would be quick or easy-not even mom.
